About Me

My photo
I’m a 60-year-old Aspergic gardening CAD-Monkey. Sardonic, cynical and with the political leanings of a social reformer, I’m also a toy and model figure collector, particularly interested in the history of plastics and plastic toys. Other interests are history, current affairs, modern art, and architecture, gardening and natural history. I love plain chocolate, fireworks and trees, but I don’t hug them, I do hug kittens. I hate ignorance, when it can be avoided, so I hate the 'educational' establishment and pity the millions they’ve failed with teaching-to-test and rote 'learning' and I hate the short-sighted stupidity of the entire ruling/industrial elite, with their planet destroying fascism and added “buy-one-get-one-free”. Likewise, I also have no time for fools and little time for the false crap we're all supposed to pretend we haven't noticed, or the games we're supposed to play. I will 'bite the hand that feeds', to remind it why it feeds.

Armtec

5 Belinda Lane, Enfield, Connecticut 06082, USA

Polystyrene kit accessories/detailing parts lead to marketing deals with Crest and Canuck, resulting in a nice range of subjects available by the time their illustrated catalogue was published in 1976, two updates would also be issued and the three when combined with the early advertisements have lead to a bit of confusion re; set numbering!

Arco - an acronym for A Rosenberg Company was bought by Mattel in 1986 (some sources state '85, but Mattel say '86). The company was the Hong Kong production firm set-up by the Rosenberg's (brothers; Herbert, J and Harold) in 1970 after Giant (one of their early clients) folded (1968/9'ish?) and they moved their families to the colony. Under the Rosenberg's it almost immediately (1971) entered into a partnership with the Gardener's PMC, one of the early Hong Kong toy manufacturers, however this relationship didn't work out and by the end of the year the Rosenberg's had walked away, taking the FOB rack-toy business with them.

It shipped the same sort of rack-toys it had imported for Giant (rigid polyethylene/polypropylene (?) or polystyrene figures/accessories, mostly carded or bagged), but once under the wing of Mattel (especially after Steve Geller (ex-Cragstone) and his partner Jerry Leighton joined in 1980) it became a major sub-brand, taking Bluebird's 'Polly Pocket' toys, Barbie side-lines, Disney-licensed stuffed-toys, the 'Play Kid' Space War and Space Explorer range of Star Wars knock-offs and other popular toys, probably best known now for their 'Other World' line of bendy fantasy toys.

Arco were involved in a voluntary safety recall with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 1995 of 200,000 Disney toys, when a problem occurred with the plastic head (shaped like Mickey Mouse) of a small Play 'N Pop purple key, the head breaking to create a choking hazard, it's worth noting that Chinese produced toys were included in the recall, but not the Mexican produced product.

This may have had something to do with Mattel's decision in winding-up of the brand, but I suspect it had more to do with changes in the power-politics of Hong Kong as Britain handed the colony back to China two years later? It would appear that Mattel set the remaining New York office up as a (autonomous/semi-autonomous?) toy-based market-research company, but that seems to have withered on the vine and Arco are no more.

Produced/handled handmade models of German vehicles of the 1930's-1950's, they also import from a Russian/Ukrainian producer, all piracies/conversion piracies, an internet source credited them with models of ‘Eastern European prototype trucks, buses and automobiles’.

On-line photographs of the vehicles show slightly rough-finished models which may be white metal. But they are nice-looking none-the-less, some with glazing and are of some unusual subjects.

Figure listing (and code numbering) bares a similarity to  ADM figures, see both that entry and PB Toys for comparison, figures are the LW imports/piracies, see the LW entry for better idea of that range.

Adams Action Model

Hawthorne, California, USA

Flourished: mid-late1950's-1960's

Model kits in injection moulded plastic, some of the AFV range were re-issued under the Snap-kit trade-name, moulds passed to, copied or inherited by Life-Like and Lindburg, some having possibly been copied from Revell (which may explain the Snap-kit marketing exercise?). May all have come via Japanese Pirate, issued around 1958, with a catalogue in that year. The '…80 Days' balloon wasn't in that catalogue, but the film was released in 1958, so the model was likely issued as a late addition in 1958 or in early 1959

US based novelty jobber/importer - online and mail-order - shipping HK/China production to the US, full inventory is somewhere between a 1960’s joke shop and a modern ‘Party’ store, with a few bits of home ware, religious iconography, tourist trinket and general novelty thrown on to the pile of ‘executive toys’, also operated with a physical shop under the Archie Mcfee title, from whence came the mail-order catalogue in the early 1990's.
